Off-Mode

A short, plain-spoken reset for men at the midlife turn — and a way into The Second Half.

Off-Mode is for men in the rough forty-to-fifty window, where the operating system that worked for twenty years starts misfiring. The marker that brings people to it is not crisis. It is usually a quieter signal: a Sunday afternoon that lasts three hours longer than it should, a flat conversation with someone you love, the sense that the steering wheel is loose.

The program is three steps, taken at your own pace. Each step is one short audio session for a moment you actually live — the flatness you cannot shake, the drive home before you walk in the door, the friend you have not called — and one journal prompt that asks the kind of question that does not have a frequent-flyer answer. The voice is the same throughout. There is no panel of experts.

Off-Mode is the entry point into the longer Second Half program. It is meant to be doable in a week of an actual life.

Week by week

What the 3 weeks ask of you.

  1. The Static

A plain reset, and a name for the flatness you cannot shake. The journal asks when the "is this it?" question shows up, and what you reach for the second it does.

  2. The In-Between

A reset you do in the parked car, before you walk in the door. The journal asks what you set down before you walked in — and whether anyone noticed.

  3. The Short List

Naming the quiet loneliness, and making one small reach. A name probably comes up during the practice. The journal carries that one person.

A prompt from inside

A name probably came up during the practice — someone you would want in the boat. This week, make one small reach. Then come back and write what happened. Even "I thought about texting Dan and didn't" is worth writing.

Journal prompts in Stillee are short on purpose. Three sentences is usually enough. Five is plenty. The point is the look, not the essay.

FAQ

The questions people ask before starting.

Is this only for men?

The program is written for men in midlife and is paced for that experience. Anyone is welcome to take it. The voice and the prompts will read as written for someone in a specific spot.

Is this a crisis program?

No. If you are in crisis, please reach out to a person. The footer of every page carries the crisis line. Off-Mode is for the quieter kind of stall, the one that is not loud enough to call by name.

What is The Second Half?

The Second Half is a longer program on midlife as a chapter, not a crisis. Off-Mode is the on-ramp. Many people stop after Off-Mode; some move into The Second Half. Both are available without a separate purchase.

Can I do this in a week?

You can. The three steps are paced for an actual life — one short session and one prompt per step, taken when you are ready. If a week is too much, take two. The structure does not break.
